The SEO Audit Every Business Owner Should Run Before Q4
Q4 is the highest-traffic quarter of the year for most businesses. But a website with unresolved SEO issues will not suddenly perform better when more people arrive — it will simply lose more of them. Here is the 10-point audit to run right now, before the peak window opens.
The weeks leading into November and December are when search volumes spike across almost every industry. It is also when businesses that spent October on SEO fundamentals quietly pull ahead of those that did not. This checklist is designed for business owners — not SEO professionals — using tools that are either free or already available to you.
If you want to understand why these signals matter for both traditional rankings and AI search visibility, I covered the full picture in my post on why businesses are invisible in AI search and in my overview of SEO and AI platforms in 2026.
Why Q4 is the wrong time to discover SEO problems
Most SEO fixes — resolving indexing errors, improving page speed, updating content — take two to six weeks to fully reflect in rankings. An issue discovered in November is too late to fix before December. An issue resolved in October can improve your Q4 performance meaningfully.
The 10-point pre-Q4 SEO audit checklist
-
1Check Google Search Console for indexing errors. Go to Coverage or Pages report. Any URLs showing as “Excluded,” “Crawled but not indexed,” or “Discovered but not indexed” need investigation. A page Google cannot index cannot rank or appear in AI answers — this is always your first priority.
-
2Verify your most important pages are actually indexed. Search
site:yourdomain.comin Google. For each core page (homepage, main service or product pages, key blog posts), confirm they appear. If they do not, check for noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, or canonical issues. -
3Run a Core Web Vitals check. Use Google PageSpeed Insights on your five most important pages. Focus on Largest Contentful Paint (under 2.5 seconds), Cumulative Layout Shift (under 0.1), and Interaction to Next Paint (under 200ms). These are direct ranking signals and affect how long visitors stay on your pages.
-
4Test your site on mobile. Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test. With over 60% of searches now conducted on mobile devices, a site that performs poorly on mobile is losing more than half its potential audience before they even read a word.
-
5Audit your title tags and meta descriptions. Every important page should have a unique, descriptive title tag (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155 characters). Duplicate or missing title tags are one of the most common issues found on small business websites — and one of the easiest to fix.
-
6Review your internal linking structure. Your most valuable pages should receive internal links from other pages on your site. Orphaned pages — pages with no internal links pointing to them — receive less crawl priority and less link equity. Add relevant internal links from your highest-traffic pages to your conversion-critical pages.
-
7Check for broken links. Use Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free tier) or Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) to identify broken internal and external links. Broken links waste crawl budget, frustrate users, and signal poor site maintenance — all of which affect how Google evaluates your site’s quality.
-
8Update your Google Business Profile. Confirm your hours, address, phone number, and service list are current. Add at least two recent photos. Respond to any unanswered reviews. Your GBP feeds directly into AI Mode for local queries — an outdated profile is invisible in local AI answers.
-
9Audit your content for E-E-A-T signals. Check your key pages for: named authorship with a linked bio, publication and update dates, specific credentials or experience statements, and genuine depth on the topic. Content without these signals consistently underperforms in Google’s current quality evaluations — and fails to earn AI citations.
-
10Check your structured data implementation. Use Google’s Rich Results Test on your key pages. If you have FAQ schema, Article schema, or LocalBusiness schema implemented, confirm there are no errors. Valid structured data improves how your content appears in traditional results and feeds into AI systems’ understanding of your content structure.
The AI visibility layer: what this audit does for your AI search presence
Every item on this checklist improves your AI search visibility alongside your traditional rankings. This is not a coincidence — it is because Google’s official AI optimization guide confirmed that generative AI features on Search draw from the same core ranking and quality systems as traditional results.
The items with the most direct impact on AI citation eligibility are:
- ✦Indexing (items 1–2) — a page not in Google’s index cannot be retrieved by AI systems for any query, regardless of how good its content is.
- ✦E-E-A-T signals (item 9) — Google’s AI retrieval layer specifically evaluates expertise and authority signals when deciding what to cite. Named authorship, credentials, and genuine depth are not optional signals for AI visibility.
- ✦Google Business Profile (item 8) — for local and commercial queries, GBP data is a direct input into AI Mode responses. This is the single highest-ROI fix for local businesses in this entire checklist.
- ✦Structured data (item 10) — FAQ schema and Article schema help AI systems understand the structure and intent of your content, improving retrieval accuracy for relevant queries.
After the audit: prioritising what to fix first
If you find multiple issues, work through them in this order of priority:
- 1Indexing errors — nothing else matters if your pages are not in the index.
- 2Core Web Vitals failures — these affect every page on your site and have a direct ranking impact.
- 3Google Business Profile — for local businesses, this has the fastest visible impact on local search and AI results.
- 4Title tags and meta descriptions — quick to fix, high visibility impact.
- 5E-E-A-T and content depth — takes more time but drives the most durable improvement in both rankings and AI citation rates.
