The Challenge

Dental Essence, a family dental clinic in Essendon with over 25 years in business, needed a faster, SEO-friendly website and a stronger local search presence to compete with other clinics for high-intent, near-me searches. The existing site wasn't built with SEO or performance in mind, which meant even strong local reputation and decades of patient trust weren't translating into organic visibility or new patient bookings. Dental content also falls into a category Google scrutinizes more heavily than most — health-adjacent information needs to clearly demonstrate real expertise and legitimacy, not just target the right keywords, or it risks being filtered out in favor of more established, clearly credentialed sources.

The Approach

As the freelance SEO specialist and WordPress developer on this project, I handled both the technical rebuild and the ongoing local SEO strategy, since neither would have worked well without the other supporting it.

WordPress rebuild with SEO built in from the ground up. Rather than optimizing an existing slow site and fighting its architecture the whole way, I built the new WordPress site with SEO and performance as core requirements from day one — clean URL structure, proper heading hierarchy, optimized images, and fast load times, since site speed and mobile experience directly affect both rankings and whether an in-pain patient searching on their phone actually stays on the page instead of bouncing to a competitor.

Local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization. I structured the site around the clinic's actual service areas and treatment types, built dedicated service pages instead of one generic "services" page trying to rank for everything at once, and optimized the Google Business Profile listing and local citations to strengthen map-pack visibility for "dentist near me" and suburb-specific searches — the exact queries that actually drive appointment bookings for a local practice, not just brand awareness.

EEAT signals for a health-adjacent business. Because dental content sits close to medical advice in Google's eyes, I made sure the site clearly surfaced practitioner credentials, the practice's 25-year track record, and patient reviews rather than burying that trust information deep in the site. Content was written to be accurate and specific about treatments and procedures rather than vague marketing copy, which matters both for user trust and for how Google's systems evaluate expertise in health-related categories where accuracy carries real weight.

Structured data and technical SEO. I implemented schema markup appropriate for a local healthcare business, so search engines could clearly parse the practice's location, hours, services, and reviews rather than inferring them from unstructured page content — a meaningful factor in earning local pack placement alongside the on-page work.

Backlink and local citation building. I built out a backlink profile through legitimate local business directories and Australian dental and health-adjacent publications, growing the site to nearly 2,900 backlinks and a domain authority of 31 — strong numbers for a single-location clinic competing against larger dental groups with bigger marketing budgets and in-house teams.

The Results

The rebuilt site now ranks for 169 organic keywords and drives roughly 676 organic visits per month, backed by a domain authority of 31 and 2,886 backlinks. More importantly for a local practice, that traffic is driving steady new patient inquiries rather than just top-funnel visibility — the combination of a technically sound site, real local SEO structure, and credible EEAT signals is what turned an outdated website into an actual patient acquisition channel for a practice that had previously relied almost entirely on word of mouth and decades of accumulated local reputation.
